ARE YOU A CANDIDATE?
Basic Medical and Anatomical Requirements
What would you like to accomplish? If you goal is to be free of the constraints of glasses and contact lenses for most or all activities, then there is a very good chance you can be successfully treatment by modern laser vision correction.
There are some safety precautions and limitations, the highlights are listed below.
The FDA and laser manufacturers impose certain requirements to candidates for laser vision correction. The basic requirements are as follows:
1. 18 years or older
2. must have a stable refraction for at least a year
3. must not be pregnant, anticipating pregnancy, or breastfeeding at time of surgery
4. no autoimmune disorders: (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, vascular disease, and uncontrolled diabetes)
5. healthy eyes: (no glaucoma, cataracts, ocular herpes simplex, strabismus, keratoconus, active eye inflammation or infection, severely dry eyes), normal corneal topography and surface contours
6. Drugs: no use of Accutane (a heavy-duty acne medication)
Refractive Measurements (depends on the laser):
1. myopia: up to -12.00 diopters
2. hyperopia: up to +6.00 diopters
3. astigmatism: up to -6.00 diopters
Corneal Thickness:
All corneas are measured for thickness prior to surgery. The FDA requires that at least 250 microns of "untouched" residual cornea be left. Our preference is for much more than that. For some people who have thinner-than-average corneas and larger treatments, LASIK may not be the best procedure. Fortunately, there are alternative techniques that use the same laser, but do not create a corneal flap. This makes some people excellent candidates for refractive surgery who may only be marginal candidates or not a candidate at all for LASIK.
