Frequently Asked Questions | FAQ's
How can I know if I am a candidate?
Over 18 years of age, healthy eyes, stable refraction. See "Are you a Candidate". There may be some factors such as thin corneas in completely healthy eyes that may make someone less than ideal. The only way to know is with a complete examination/consultation
I just need glasses for reading. I see great at distance. Can LASIK help that?
Quite possibly. If you are over 40 and struggling with reading vision, then "monovision" or "blended" vision may be a great option. It can be demonstrated at the office at the time of the consultation. We may need to treat only one eye!
I have astigmatism. Am I still a candidate?
Most amounts of astigmatism are treated at the same time as the nearsighted or farsighted correction. There are some rare causes of large degrees of astigmatism that may make you a poor candidate for LASIK
Does LASIK cause dry eye?
Yes, usually it is temporary. The creation of the LASIK Flap severs corneal nerves and it may take weeks to months for them to grow back and recover. Most patients are instructed to use artificial tears for a few to several weeks. Most of Dr, Johnson's patients routinely receive long-lasting collagen punctal plugs to increase the amount of natural tears present until the cornea recovers.
Should I wait until the technology improves?
You can always wait for an elective procedure like LASIK. The technology has never been better or safer. Especially with Custom LASIK, some of the concerns like haloes and glare are much less of a concern now than they were before. Ask yourself: How long do you want to wait on the sidelines while others are enjoying the freedom from glasses and contact lenses?
Will Medical Insurance Cover it?
Not likely. We do participate in some insurance referral programs that automatically negotiate an additional savings on top of our current discount promotion. Check with your insurance program or call us.
Why should I pay more than the $499 I see advertised all over the internet?
Refractive surgery is technologically advance, but it is not automated. It is not a simple commodity where you just search for the cheapest price. The lower prices are usually for standard, not custom treatment. They may be performed on older lasers or lasers incapable of custom treatment. If you read the fine print, you would not likely be eligible for the advertised low price anyway due to the many restrictions. These discount centers often employ itinerant surgeons for hire. You may not even meet them until the day of your surgery. They may not spend the time to answer all your questions or pour over your chart to make sure it is safe and appropriate to proceed. The budget programs may not include follow up care more than a few months, and they will likely charge you again for any touch up procedures that may be needed.
Are you saying I should go to the most expensive office?
No. I know that some LASIK surgeons self-promote themselves as "Doctor to the Stars" or similarly with professional athletes. Many of those "stars" and athletes were compensated the procedure in return for their endorsement. Because of this slick marketing, they will charge more and get away with it because of the "perceived" value. At OC Laser Vision Center, we believe our fees are very competitive for Custom LASIK , without cheapening or turning the procedure into a commodity.
What if I'm too nervous, or move during the procedure?
We understand your concern, but even the most nervous patients usually do quite well. The actual laser time is usually between 15-40 seconds and with the iris registration and eye tracker software, the laser follows all your eye movements. If the eye were to move too much, the laser will stop and allow the doctor to reposition the patient and then continue the treatment to completion. We additionally offer most everyone a mild sedative (Valium or Xanax) to help relax them.
I was told my corneas are too thin for LASIK. What can be done?
There may be an option to perform a "surface" ablation or treatment like PRK. It depends on the amount of correction and how thin the cornea is to begin with. Both measurements are performed at the consultation and Dr. Johnson can discuss that option if appropriate then and there.
Would you perform these procedures on a family member?
Yes, Dr. Johnson has already performed laser vision correction on four of his family members!
